Tosca Prologue
Sunday, October 30, 2005 at 2:00pm
Irvine Barclay Theatre
The public is invited to learn more about Puccini’s masterpiece, Tosca, at the Opera Pacific Prologue on Sunday, October 30, 2005 at 2:00pm at the Irvine Barclay Theatre located on the University of California, Irvine campus. Musicologist Ronald Shaheen Ph.D. will lead an informative discussion on the drama and history behind Tosca. Members of the Opera Pacific production, Victoria Litherland as Floria Tosca and Richard Paul Fink as Baron Scarpia, will perform excerpts from Act II of the opera, followed by a question and answer session with the speaker and cast members.
Tosca will then be performed as the opening opera of the 20th Season of Opera Pacific at the Orange County Performing Arts Center for four performances, November 15, 17, 19, and 20.
Opera Pacific’s Prologues provide an introduction to the opera for all audiences and are designed to provide information for those new to opera, as well as those who have been lifelong fans of the art form. Executive Director Robert Jones said, “Whether you are attending your first grand opera or have been a fan all of your life, spending a Sunday afternoon at one of Opera Pacific’s Prologues is sure to engage you with Tosca so that you can get the most out of seeing the opera when it is performed in November at the Orange County Performing Arts Center.”
Past Prologue speakers have included scholars, critics, artists, stage directors and conductors. Each has lent insight into the history, music and plot intricacies as intended by the composer. Presented in two parts with refreshments at intermission, Prologues also provide audience members an opportunity to ask questions in discussions with the guest speaker, and hear excerpts from the upcoming productions performed by mainstage cast members.
