OPERA PACIFIC OPERA CAMP 2006
Christopher Columbus

AUDITIONS MARCH 18th, 2006

Libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni

Opera Pacific will be holding auditions for its annual summer opera camp on Saturday, March 18, 2006 for students entering grade four through freshman entering college. Applications to qualify for an audition are due by March 1, 2006.

Opera Pacific's Opera Camp is a three-and-a-half-week opera-training program for young singers seeking additional training and experience in a fun and energetic summer camp. The program includes daily course work in all facets of opera performance and production, as well as rehearsals for a fully staged opera production presented at the end of camp.

This summer’s production is Christopher Columbus, a pastiche opera bouffe based on the music of famed French composer Jacques Offenbach. The story follows Christopher Columbus on his expedition to the New World. Books and lyrics are by Don White and a score edited and compiled by Patric Schmid.

Auditions will consist of 12 bars of any opera aria, art song or standard Broadway Repertoire. An optional additional 12 bars of a contrasting piece can be brought to the audition and may or may not be asked for. All applicants must bring piano music in the right key to their audition with the appropriate 12 bars clearly marked. A pianist will be provided. No auditions will be heard a cappella or to CD recording accompaniment. The audition application form can be downloaded from the Opera Education section at www.operapacific.org

Tentative tuition for Opera Camp 2006 is $550.00. There is no additional cost for costumes and class materials. A limited number of partial and full scholarships will be available. Opera Pacific will not refuse anyone the opportunity to attend Opera Camp based on financial need. Applications for both full and partial scholarships will be available at the auditions. Scholarships will be awarded based on need and a successful audition.

The camp participants will begin their instruction and rehearsal process on July 19, working weekdays in preparation for their performances of Christopher Columbus on August 11, 2006, at the Claire Trevor Theatre on the campus of the University of California, Irvine, with additional performances on August 12 and 13, 2006. The August 11 and 12, 2006 performances will be held at 7 p.m., and 2 p.m. on August 13, 2006.

For more information or to schedule an audition please email Jennifer Cook, Opera Camp Producer at jcook@operapacific.org.

Opera Camp 2006 will have a fixed number of PAID positions for stage technicians and stage managers ages 14-18. If you are interested in these positions please send a resume and cover letter with references to Jennifer Cook, Camp Producer 600 W. Warner Ave. Santa Ana, CA 92707.
