OPERA PACIFIC GUILD ALLIANCE
Laila S. Conlin High School Vocal Competition
The 2008 Opera Pacific Guild Alliance - Laila S. Conlin High School Vocal Competition will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at Grace Church in Laguna Niguel.
BACKGROUND
The Guild Alliance is a volunteer support group of Opera Pacific. The Vocal Competition is funded by the generosity of Guild Alliance members through donations to its Tribute Fund and was established to encourage young vocalists to pursue their art form.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible as a contestant, the student must be an Orange County resident attending high school, or be studying with a music teacher who resides in Orange County.
CRITERIA
ROUND ONE - ELIMINATION ROUND - DEADLINE FRIDAY, FRIDAY, APRIL 4, 2008: Applicants must submit the Vocal Competition application, a CD or tape of the required repertoire they wish to perform for the competition, a return address stamped envelope and a $25 non-refundable application fee. Submitted applicants' CD or tape will be screened and those who qualify will be invited to advance to Round Two. The invitation to Round Two will include the notification of audition time and will be sent by mail.
ROUND TWO - LIVE COMPETITION - MAY 10, 2008: Applicants must perform the repertoire submitted on the CD or tape from Round One. Applicants will be judged on their talent. The appropriateness of their presentation, technical and musical interpretive abilities, stage presence, personal appearance and professional attitude will be factors in the final decision of the judges. A professional accompanist will be provided at no additional fee. Any additional time needed with the accompanist will be at the expense of the student. The student may choose to provide their own accompanist, however, teachers may not accompany their students.
REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS
Please be prepared to sing two pieces: one operatic or oratorio aria in the original language and key, and one art song; or two art songs. One of the two selections must be in English. Total time limit 7 minutes. No changes are allowed once the application has been accepted. Please select pieces not performed the previous year. Original copies of music must be given to the judges at the competition. (This is a U.S. COPYRIGHT LAW).

Applications may be submitted through school programs or private teachers. It is the responsibility of the individual applicant to keep the audition time assigned. No changes will be made without prior arrangement. Winners will be selected on the day of the audition, in both male and female categories. Adjudication sheets will be mailed at a later date.
SCHOLARSHIPS TOTALING $5,000 WILL BE AWARDED
Winners will be presented at a Guild Alliance luncheon event on Wednesday, May 23, 2008 at the Wyndham Hotel Orange County, at which time they will perform and be presented with the monetary awards. Winners should be prepared to provide an accompanist and perform one of the repertoire pieces selected by the Vocal Competition Chair.
