The Elixir of Love
Gaetano Donizetti

April 11th, 14th, 19th, 22nd - 2007
In Italian with English translation projected above stage
First Premiered: Milan, May 12, 1832
"William Burden sings with unfailing sweetness…and has the looks of a young romantic." ~ The Financial Times

Donizetti’s light-hearted confection is all about – what else? – romance, love potions, the twists and turns of courtship, and happy endings. Our production, a re-imagination by Sir Jonathan Miller (Theater & Opera Director, Physician, Author), is set in a west Texas diner in the 1950s! And our cast includes sensational tenor William Burden and Russian soprano Olga Makarina. Elixir is a lively romp – the tale of a country bumpkin, Nemorino, who can’t quite catch the eye of the woman he adores. He turns to a traveling salesman who’s pushing the title’s love potion – and hilarity ensues!
